Two Teens Killed, Two Injured in Weekend Crash

According to news reports, the single-vehicle crash took place when the 17-year-old driver overcorrected and drove into a ditch.

February 23, 2019 – 5:52 pm: Two 15-year-old boys were ejected from a Dodge Journey that rolled over into a ditch on Saturday afternoon, and were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, 17-year-old Martha Geale Vela, and another 16-year-old passenger were injured in the crash.

The accident took place near Ben Wheeler in east Texas. The Dodge Journey was traveling northbound on FM 773 at the time of the crash.

According to police, the vehicle began to drift off of the road, and the driver attempted to swerve to get back on the road. She turned into the opposite lane and overcorrected, driving into a ditch.

The vehicle rolled over when it hit the ditch. The two 15-year-old boys were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the vehicle. When DPS troopers arrived on the scene the boys were pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident is not clear at this time. Investigation into the crash is ongoing. DPS will release more information about what happened as it becomes available.
