Two Pilots Injured in Air Force Trainer Crash

September 18, 2018

According to news reports, the student pilot and the instructor both sustained minor injuries and were taken to the base’s medical clinic.

September 18, 2018 – 4:00 pm: An Air Force training craft crashed in San Antonio on Tuesday afternoon, injuring both of the individuals on board.

The crash happened  at the Circle Dot Ranch, near Rolling Oaks Mall.

Brandi Williams, a witness on the scene, reported that she saw the two pilots eject from the plane just before she heard a loud explosion. The plane did not burst into flames, however, and she said the craft appeared to “come down easy.”

The aircraft involved in the crash was a Wing T-6A Texan II training plane. This model was grounded earlier this year because of concerns about the craft’s role in causing hypoxia (deficiency of oxygen in the blood) and other negative physiological effects among flyers.

Training flights from the 12th Flying Training Wing at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph indefinitely suspended further training flights.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known and is under investigation at this time. Randy Martin, spokesman for the 12th Flying Training Wing, said, “Obviously, this is a serious accident, so we have to follow the protocol established by the Air Force.”
