According to news reports, this is the fifth death on Houston’s light rails this year, and Metro has lowered train speeds as a result of the accident.
October 4, 2018 – 10:00 am: A Metropolitan Transit Authority struck and killed a man in north Houston on Thursday morning, marking the fifth death on Metro’s rails this year.
The accident happened as a southbound train was approaching its crossing at Fulton and Crosstimbers.
The as-yet unidentified man was standing on the median and stepped onto the tracks, apparently without seeing the train coming from behind him. It is unknown whether the man was wearing headphones, or possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Laura Whitley, a spokeswoman for Metro, said this crash raises safety concerns that will potentially lead to long-term changes. On Thursday, train speeds were lowered from 30 mph to 20 mph. Whitley added, “We have prioritized projects based on the number of accidents and near-misses along our rail lines.”
According to federal records, this is the fifth death along Metro rails during 2018. Three of the previous deaths were ultimately classified as suicides. This incident is still under investigation at this time.
