Three Killed in Wrong-Way Crash West of Inez

March 16, 2019

According to news reports, fatigue and complications from diabetes could have contributed to the crash.

March 16, 2019 – 3:30 am: Carlos Zamarripa Campos, 48, Annatasia Nina Guerra, 29, and Destiny Lynn Gonzales, 28, were all killed in a crash that took place early on Saturday morning. Campos was reportedly heading the wrong way on the highway at the time of the accident.

The crash took place on U.S. 59, just west of Inez.

Investigators believe fatigue was the cause of the accident. Campos was making a 300-mile trip from Houston to his home in Hidalgo County at the time of the crash. Some of his family members have speculated that diabetes could have also contributed to the crash.

According to Dr. Diana Mercado-Marmarosh, a family physician at the Jackson County Hospital District, symptoms of diabetes could contribute to confusion and impairment of driving abilities. She said, “People can look drunk… but, come to find out, they weren’t taking meds.”

Police and the man’s family both agree that intoxication was not a factor leading up to the crash. Investigation into the crash is still ongoing, and more information will be made public as it comes to light.
