Pedestrian Killed on Highway 59 Near George R. Brown

September 3, 2018

Police say the woman was hit and killed on the elevated portion of U.S. Highway 59 South, shutting down the freeway for several hours.

September 3, 2018 – 3:00 am: A woman was struck and killed by a Nissan near the George R. Brown Convention Center early Monday morning.

Police responded when the driver of the Nissan called to report going over a large bump. She told police she wasn’t sure what she’d hit, and the police found the victim’s body when they arrived.

The victim was on the elevated portion of U.S. 59 south, which was shut down for several hours after that.

Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson reported that it’s highly unusual for a pedestrian to be on the elevated part of the freeway, so they aren’t sure what she was doing up there. One possibility is that the victim’s car had broken down and she was crossing the highway to find help.

“The driver of the Nissan is not intoxicated, and I don’t expect she will be charged,” Crowson said. However, he added that the driver’s involvement would be part of the investigation.

The investigation is still underway, and the victim’s identity has not yet been released.
