HPD Officer Injured After Being Rear-Ended

Police report that the driver responsible for the crash was tested for intoxication, but the tests came back negative.

March 2, 2019 – 10:00 pm: A Houston Police Department officer was rear-ended on Saturday night, suffering a fractured rib and facial fractures. According to HPD’s Twitter account, the department is “very thankful that he’s otherwise in good spirits and stable condition.”

The accident happened on US-59, near Highway 288.

The officer was trying to help a pedestrian on the side of the freeway when the crash took place. The driver responsible for the crash was a 55-year-old man. He was originally detained for suspicions of intoxication, but when the tests for intoxication came back negative, he was released.

Neither the officer nor the driver who hit him has been publicly identified at this time. The cause of the accident is unclear at the present moment.

Investigation into this crash is ongoing, and police will release more information to the public as it becomes available. At the present time it does not appear that the driver responsible for the crash will face any criminal charges. There is no update on the condition of the police officer injured in the crash.
