According to recent reports, the man was taking part in last weekend’s “Go Topless” Jeep Weekend at the time of the accident.
May 19, 2019 – 6:00 pm: Tanner Francis, 21, was seriously injured at Crystal Beach during the Jeep Weekend event on Bolivar Peninsula last weekend.
The accident took place when Francis was riding on the back of a pickup truck. He fell off of the back end and was later run over by the truck.
According to Julie Busby, Francis’s mother, “The base of his skull, which they said is a very hard break, the blow was so bad it broke the base of his skull.” Francis also almost lost his left ear, experienced nerve damage, and suffered bruising and bleeding in his lungs.
Francis was reportedly awake and able to communicate through writing as of Monday morning.
There were eight major accidents and 68 arrests at Jeep Week in Galveston this year, causing concerns that the event has become too dangerous and may need to be ended. A petition to put the event to an end
now has 11,000 signatures out of a goal of 15,000.
The accident is still under investigation at this time.
