Houston Man Killed in Gonzales County Hunting Accident

According to police, the man was killed by an accidental gunshot at Independence Ranch in Gonzales County.

October 7, 2018 – 1:00 pm: A 36-year-old man from Houston was killed in what appears to be a hunting accident at Independence Ranch on Sunday afternoon.

Independence Ranch is a 265-acre location in Gonzales County that specializes in hog hunting. Police were called onto the scene with reports of a shooting, and arrived to find the man dead with a single bullet wound to the head.

According to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office, the man was killed by an accidental discharge of his hunting partner’s rifle. The man’s partner was reportedly climbing out of a hunting stand when the gun went off and the accident took place.

The Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office is still working on the case. The Travis County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy.

The victim’s name has not been released at this time, and will not be released until his family is notified of the incident.

Gonzales County Chief Deputy Lynn Wilburn reports that investigators are checking to ensure that safety protocols were being followed at the time of the gun’s discharge.
