Houston Teen Killed in Polaris UTV Accident

News reports state that the victim was the passenger in the utility vehicle when the driver lost control.

September 5, 2018 – 12:00 pm: A teenage boy was killed when the UTV he was a passenger in rolled over into a retention pond. The 16-year-old boy, who was wearing a seat belt at the time, drowned in the pond.

The accident took place near Wimberley, where the 16-year-old Cooper David Potts was visiting. He was a resident of Katy, near Houston.

According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Potts was riding in a Polaris RZR when the driver lost control near a retention pond. The UTV rolled over into the pond, and the restrained Potts was unable to free himself from the vehicle.

It is unknown why the driver lost control of the vehicle by the side of the retention pond. The driver was able to get away from the UTV unharmed.

When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Potts was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s office, where he was pronounced dead.

At this point, it is unclear why Potts was unable to free himself from his seat belt in time. Investigation into the accident is ongoing.
