Scott Mann says he was at work when the e-cigarette exploded in one of his pockets.
September 11, 2018 – 12:00 pm: A 44-year-old Fort Worth man suffered second and third-degree burns when an electronic cigarette exploded in his pocket.
Scott Mann, a self-employed general contractor, was on the phone when the e-cig blew up. He said, “I was just sitting there talking to my dad, and suddenly an explosion went off in my pocket.”
Mann reports that there were three loud noises, and the next thing he knew his pants were on fire. The flames caused third-degree burns on Mann’s right leg, and his attempts to put out the flame with his right hand led to second-degree burns there.
Mann told reporters, “I can honestly say this is the worst pain I’ve ever had in my entire adult life.”
Despite his trouble, Mann said he considers himself lucky that the e-cigarette exploded in his pocket. He said, “If it would have been my mouth, it could have blown out my teeth or possibly my eyes.”
This explosion is part of a growing trend of exploding e-cigarettes. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that there were 195 e-cigarette fire and explosion incidents nationwide between 2009 and 2016.
Scott Mann says he will not be using e-cigarettes anymore.
