October 6, 2018 – 9:00 am: Two police officers and two firefighters were injured in a crash in Hutchins on Saturday morning when they were hit by an SUV that went out of control.

The accident took place on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20, between Interstate 45 and Dowdy Ferry Road.

The four were responding to a minor single-vehicle crash when the SUV lost control due to wet road conditions and going too fast for the situation.

Only one of the four first responders was seriously injured in the crash. Hutchins firefighter Mike Tilford experienced broken ribs, a fractured vertebra, and a lacerated kidney. According to news reports, Tilford was scheduled to be released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Lopez was one of the police officers on the scene. He said, “I have scrapes and bruises, and I’m real sore, but thank God it could have been worse.”

The driver of the SUV is not being charged with any crime, although it’s important to note that state law requires drivers to drive slowly or move over when first responders are by the side of the road.
