According to the U.S. Forest Service, the firefighter from California died in a crash that took place in the Sam Houston National Forest.
March 27, 2019 – 12:00 pm: Daniel Laird, a firefighter who had worked with the U.S. Forest Service for over two decades, was killed in a helicopter crash in Montgomery County on Wednesday. Two other people experienced non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The accident took place in the Sam Houston National Forest, about 70 miles north of Houston. Laird’s helicopter went down in the forest, hitting the ground on its right side.
Laird was a helitack captain from California’s Tahoe National Forest. He was helping with a controlled burn in the Sam Houston National Forest at the time of the crash.
According to authorities, Laird was killed in the crash and pronounced dead on the scene. The other two members of the helicopter’s crew were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The identities of the other two members have not been made public at this time.
The cause of the crash is currently unknown. Investigators are still trying to find the cause of the accident, and more information will be made public as it comes to light.
