March 17, 2019 – 11:00 am: A fire broke out on Sunday morning at the Intercontinental Terminals Company Deer Park facility. As of 11:00 am on Monday, experts believed the flames might take as much as two days to go out.

The fire broke out in two tanks at the Independence Parkway facility, just north of Highway 225.

The first tank contained naphtha, while the second contained xylene. From that point the fire spread to a third tank, which contains toluene. All three of these chemicals are flammable and can be fatal if swallowed.

ITC released a statement on Monday morning, saying, “Although the risk of explosion is minimal, we continue to take precautions to further reduce this possibility.”

About 30 ITC employees were at the facility when the fire started. Per local news reports, none of them were reported to have been injured and all of them have been accounted for.

SH-225 was shut down from Beltway 8 to Independence Parkway for a time but has since been reopened.

Firefighters are continuing to hold back the fire with foam. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.
