March 21, 2019 – 12:00 pm: The benzene warning has been lifted around the International Terminals Co. (ITC) petrochemical plant in the Houston Suburb of Deer Park.
The fire in the plant, which began on Sunday, March 17, was finally put out on Wednesday.
A Shell facility in the Deer Park area issued a shelter-in-place warning because of benzene levels. Residents in the Deer Park area were advised to remain indoors until the warning was lifted. They state that the levels are at or below OSHA requirements for reporting, but they issued the warning on their own initiative.
A few school districts cancelled classes on Wednesday because of concerns over air quality.
Benzene is a highly flammable gas that has reportedly caused headaches, nausea, and nosebleeds among Deer Park residents. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), long-term exposure can cause damage to blood and bone marrow.
Bryan Parras, a Sierra Club organizer in Houston, says, “This issue isn’t over just because the fire is out. We want systems in place that will protect our communities.”
