Beaumont Ophthalmologist Struck and Killed While Crossing Street

March 5, 2019

According to news reports, Dr. Levacy had been a practitioner for more than 30 years.

March 5, 2019 – 6:25 pm: Dr. Richard Levacy was killed in a crash that took place while he was crossing a street in downtown Houston last Tuesday evening. He was a longtime practitioner of ophthalmology in Beaumont, having served the community for more than 30 years.

The accident took place at the intersection of Capital Street and Austin Street, near the Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

According to reports from HPD Vehicular Crimes Division, Dr. Levacy was hit by an orange Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler was headed northbound on Austin, stopped at a red light, and hit Levacy while making a left turn once the light turned green.

Dr. Levacy was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and died on March 6. The driver was not injured in the accident and did not show any signs of being intoxicated. At this time, the driver does not face any criminal charges and has not been identified publicly.

The accident is still under investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

We are saddened by these stories, and they are far too common in local news. Pedestrians die because drivers aren’t paying attention to their surroundings. When the victim of a negligent driver is a person like Dr. Levacy, who had such a dramatic impact on the people he helped in his practice, the tragedy of these preventable incidents becomes even more apparent.

Dr. Levacy performed more than 30,000 surgeries and saw more than 200,000 people in his ophthalmology practice. He helped a blind man regain his vision. He even overcame cancer while still seeing patients. Clearly, Dr. Levacy will be missed by not just family and friends, but the entire Beaumont community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone grieving his loss.
